My inspiration to grow in the practice of yoga comes from students. I am committed to passing on the teachings of yoga to help students acquire a well-rounded understanding and practice.

About Me

I am a trusted and respected professional with a robust and successful career as a yoga teacher and yoga therapist for over 20 years. I have had the chance to teach yoga to people with cancer, cancer survivors and caregivers, and veterans. I have taught in medical studies, wellness organizations, and fitness centers, including the UNC Get Real and Heel program and UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Support Program.

I am known for exceptional approachability and adapting classes to meet the abilities of participants. I listen to who you are and create a therapeutic relationship with you. I am here for you to embrace you where you are. I understand that you are someone who seeks support and guidance to find relief from mental and physical pain.

I bring 30 years of personal practice and 21 years of yoga teaching. I have faced a cancer diagnosis with subsequent surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy. Through this, I found recovery from physical and emotional trauma. I have also faced and recovered from chronic low back pain. In fact, I started practicing yoga in 1992 in San Francisco, California, when a car accident left me with continued back pain. Yoga provided relief.

To this day, yoga remains an essential part of my life as I work to stay active, healthy, and pain-free. The stress relief and restorative nature of yoga continues to help me every day single since my breast cancer diagnosis.

  • “More than any other teacher I have worked with, Kathy focuses most on the spirit.  She is calm – and bestows calm and mindfulness in her classes, encouraging students of all levels and physical issues to do what’s right for their bodies.”

    Clare, Student since 2008

  • "Kathy is a very supportive and encouraging type of instructor- that accepts us as we are- does not make you feel like you can not participate unless you meet a certain standard. We are all in this journey together. The class has varied people, personalitiies, yoga talents, physical strengths, male, female, working, retired, and we all love yoga together."

  • "What keeps me coming back to Kathy’s sessions is honestly the sense of heartfelt community that you are not in this fight against cancer alone. With the vast array of medical treatments, whether physical or mental, that may be available to you today, nowhere else do you get that level of support on a daily basis."

  • "What I find unique about Kathy’s classes is that sense of caring for everyone as unique as we all are, yet we all share something in common -- CANCER. We do this not only in support of each other but also in support of the community at large."

  • "Kathy has been able to build a sense of community while teaching the class on zoom- a real feat! I was skeptical at first. I think Kathy's warmth, sense of humor and sincere interest in each participant has been important in creating this community. She has also provided some 30 minute yoga sessions which are especially helpful when I’m not able to attend the regular sessions."

  • "I started yoga with Kathy almost eight years ago. I was eager to regain a healthy body and once again believe in my body's strength and abilities. I was 3 years post cancer treatment and 1.5 years post double knee replacements. I will always be grateful for Kathy's approach to yoga it truly help me recapture an active life with my family and grandchildren."

  • "I actually build my daily schedule around the Zoom yoga classes. I try not to miss a class because I enjoy Kathy’s teaching so much and the quick interactions with the other yoga folks at the beginning of class."

  • “My practice has finally flourished with Kathy’s guidance. Her steady restorative approach has allowed me to build strength safely and confidently.By the end of each session I feel stronger, taller, refreshed, and joyful. I am incredibly grateful for Kathy. Her classes have made me a healthier, happier person.”
